As an enthusiastic Disneylander, every trip I took to the Park always included a trip to the gift shop - even when the lines were too long to wait for the Pirates ride - and I would leave with my newly minted, dated doubloon. The first time my husband and I went to the Park and I told him about my souvenir collection of doubloons, he thought it a waste of time and money: in fact he wasn’t terribly impressed with the whole idea of Disneyland. I kept the coins but dumped him…
Although this single coin up for bid isn’t the earliest one in my collection, I thought it would be of interest as I got it on July 17, 1980, Disneyland’s 25th birthday. It’s a Type II Disneyland Doubloon Medallion which was used in the stamper from around 1976 through 1998. (Thanks to the folks at the Park Pennies website for their research.) The front of the doubloon has good, deep indentions and has just the right amount of wear and heft (it weighs 20 grams) to feel like a real coin., with a diameter of 1 1/2” at its widest point, and a depth of nearly 1/8”. The obverse of the coin has the Pirates logo in the center and directly under the crossed bones are the initials "WDP" (Walt Disney Productions), and around the edge of the coin is where the stamper would print your message. There is a 3/16” hole to the right of the coin which allows you to keep on a keychain or wear as a necklace, or just store this unique Disneyland keepsake in your pocket or wallet and allow it to remind you of the trips and experiences you made to one of the most magical places on earth.
