Note: For anyone who was watching this as a BIN, I've decided to turn it over to an auction format. Good luck!
1908 Vanderbilt Cup Locomobile silver-plate ceremonial trophy cup. These were given out to Locomobile executives and invited guests at a banquet held in Bridgeport, Connecticut on November 9, 1908 to honor George Robertson’s Vanderbilt Cup race win driving the “Old 16”. Available later through Locomobile in a pewter version a...s a radiator mascot, these silver cups were never available to the public and likely numbered less than a few hundred examples. These are now one of the most sought after pieces of Vanderbilt Cup and early motor racing memorabilia.
The bottom of the cup is marked Forbes Silver Co. U.S.A. / Quadruple / 1048.
Condition is excellent overall. There is little to no wear to the silver on the outside of the cup. There is some loss to plating inside the bottom of the cup. There are two minor dings to the rim of the cup and and another ding of note near the bottom of the cup. Please see all photos provided with the listing for best idea of condition. I used X’s on a couple of the photos to point out where the few more noticeable dings are located. Again, on the whole this is one of the nicer condition examples of the cup I have seen.
Size is approximately 4-1/16” high and 2-1/2” wide at the base.
There are only a few examples of this cup to have been sold publicly that can be found on the internet, averaging at just below $2500. The last findable example, sold via Nest Egg Auctions in 2016, sold for $3800 and appears to have been in comparable condition to the example offered here.
Please feel free to ask any questions you might have prior to bidding. Thanks.
