Up for sale here is an original , one of a kind, vintage, Mid Century work by well collected clothing designer and fabric artist Mariska Karasz (1898-1960). The artist's title for this work is Desert Flower. It is a framed hand embroidered and stitched fabric picture supported but not glued down by a masonite panel. The work only measures 13 inches high by 8 1/2 inches across. The total size with the original, simple wood frame comes to about 14 inches by 9 1/2 inches. The ...work dates from 1955 and originally comes from the famous New York City Gallery that was run by Bertha Schaefer and it still retains its original Gallery Label on the back. As for condition there is one tiny string missing in the lower left and there are two additional loose stitches that you might want to restore but they look OK the way they are. There is some very old water stain on the bottom of the wood frame but the fabric is clean and not stained. The lower right corner of the frame also has a small gap in it. You could probably hang it up and enjoy it just as it is. Mariska Karasz is listed in the published books Davenports Art Reference and Price Guide and in the popular Who Was Who in American Art. These original fabric pictures are very rare and difficult to come by. We did sell one piece by this artist , another floral subject matter piece, a bit larger for about $650 ten or eleven years ago but we have not seen really that many if any others besides this piece since we last had a work by her. You might be able to find some of her vintage clothing and some fabric designs for sale which seem to be quite collectible.
