Up for auction is a Truly Superb Edward Farmer Sterling Silver Desk Box Adorned with a Stunning Yuan to earlier Ming Dynasty Pure White Jade Pierced Plaque. This desk box is one of several fine and important examples being offered in this week’s estate auction.
As many of you may know Edward Farmer is an important silver maker that is most famous for adorning silver works with fine antique Chinese jades. This box is one of the finest examples I have personally seen. The box is mounted with a truly superb quality pierced pure white jade large plaque. The jade plaque has many interesting and beautiful features including crane bird figures. The unique stylization of this plaque carving would indicate an age of Yuan to earlier Ming dynasty. I have also included an image with other jade objects to show the true bright-white color of the jade plaque. The sterling box itself is also of very fine quality and still retains its original cedar wood interior. The box has an old inscription to the boxes interior that is also nice provenance to have with the box.
The silver box and jade plaque could use a light cleaning. The box and plaque are otherwise in very fine condition with no damage, no chips, no missing pieces, or repairs of any kind. About as nice of estate-fresh condition as one could hope to find an example like this in. The box is a nice size for practical use and displaying measuring 5 1/2 inches long, by 3 3/4 inches wide, and 1 3/4 inches tall. The jade plaque measures 2 7/8 inches long, by 2 1/2 inches wide. The box has a total weight of 462 grams. I doubt you will see another example of this amazing investment-grade quality come up for auction again any time soon, mostly being offered without reserve!
