Item History & Price

Information:
Reference Number: Avaluer:4707Maker: Bair-Fulton
Original Description:
The Bair-Fulton Arithmetician is a very attractive adder and a bit of an anachronism.  It was patented in 1928, by which time numerous other dial-type adders had been introduced with carry mechanisms, yet the Bair-Fulton has no carry.  In operation it is very much like a slide adder (Troncet or Kummer type) but somewhat less convenient.  Addition is performed with the gear teeth on the top of the dials, and subtraction with the teeth below.  As the wheels have stops... at both ends of their rotation, clearing can be performed by simply dragging your thumb from left to right along the gear teeth on the bottom, returning all the wheels to zero.  Brief instructions are on a label on the back.  The label on the front, part of which has been torn off, would have originally said, “Arithmetician Calculator No. 6”.  The “6” refers to the number of dials.  The Arithmetician was also available with 7 or 8 dials, the No. 7 and No. 8 respectively.
This Bair-Fulton works and the wheels all turn with varying degrees of stiffness.  Clearing with your thumb is not advised, given the stiffness of the dials and sharpness of the gear teeth.
This adder is from the collection of Robert K. (“Bob”) Otnes, PhD, one of the founding members of the Oughtred Society and the original editor of the Journal of the Oughtred Society.  It is being sold by the Oughtred Society on his behalf.
The Oughtred Society was founded in 1991 by a group of slide rule collectors and is dedicated to the preservation and history of slide rules and other calculating instruments. Membership is open to anyone.  Further information about the Oughtred Society can be found at: http://www.oughtred.org/.
PayPal is the only accepted form of payment.  Buyers within California will be charged 7.25% sales tax.
Shipping will be by USPS Priority Mail.  Shipping charges will be somewhat higher for destinations outside the USA.
