Tuscany Books offers:An interesting association piece, being a ca 1918 painting of a medieval miniature by the Munich artist and art restorer Annett...e Simon-von Eckardt (1871-1934) who was an associate and supposedly the paramour of the artist Franz Marc (1880-1916). Franz Marc was a major figure in the German Expressionismus art movement and one of the founders of the journal "Der blaue Reiter". Annette was born into a well to do family as Annete von Eckardt. Her father was a high ranking diplomat of Germany, which is the reason why Annette lived in several countries and got a good education in art and art history which enabled her to become an important person in the Munich art milieu. She specialized in painting medieval miniatures and was called upon when facsimiles of medieval manuscripts were being published. In 1918 Heinrich Woelfflin published the manuscript known as the "Bamberg apocalypse" and the painting of one of the miniatures from that work is being offered here. A lengthy article in the Sueddeutsche Zeitung of Dec. 27 1917--a reprint of which you can find if you google "Kunst-100 Jahre Zweisamkeit"--will tell you more about the relationship of Annette and Franz.At the lower right corner one can find the initials AvE which stands for Annette von Eckardt.Size of the matted miniature : ca. 17.5" x 13.5"(445 mm x 340 mm).
