Coin - Slot Automata Music Box Cat And Kitten Figures 1880s
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:4407995 | Theme: Music |
A charming Germancoin-slot automata from the 1880s.
When wound, drop in thecoin, the large cat plays the fiddle, one kitten kicks
its leg and the centre two dance up and down.
There are a number ofpatent dates on the rear of the box - all in the 1880s -
and, amazingly, thecrude string-and-wire mechanism is still working perfectly,
as is the coin-slotactivation.
It’s a little slow – nodoubt a touch of lubrication would help, but there’s no way
I’...m getting intomessing with it.
The overall dimensionsof the frame are 9 ½ inches x 8. Depth is 3 ½ inches.
A coin through the slotoperates a lever, which then operates the spring-driven
musical movement and acogged wheel, from which all subsequent movements
are taken.
An amazing survivor, bought as is some 20 years ago from an antique store in Dover
Only thing missing isthe key to the box.
I've done a little digging and found a similar but much simpler box without the coin slot mechanism was sold here some time ago. Item number 253504189373
ADDED: I've had a couple of queries, pointing out that two of the kittens appear to be a lighter color than the rest and have they been replaced?I totally understand the question and yes, two are lighter. Whilst I can categorically state that there's no work been done to the mechanism, I can't confirm either way on the figures. The item is exactly as I bought it ages ago. Please bid accordingly
