Dunhill Shell Briar pipesOriginal promotionalleaflet, 1940s I know very little abouttobacciana in general and even less about the specialist interest field of collectableand vintage pipes. I do however, know enough to know that Dunhill is thepre-eminent name among the most sought-after pipes. I found this little leaflettucked inside a 1949 desk diary, so I presume it was issued in or around thatyear. I think it is most likely a “point-of-sale” leaflet that would have been...picked up in a tobacconist’s shop by someone potentially interested in buying aDunhill Shell Briar. Alternatively, it may have been included in the box withnew pipes to encourage the purchaser to consider buying another. I guesscollectors are already aware of this but the number of different Shell Briarpipes available is amazing (to me, at least). As you can see, no less than eighteencurrent variant models are illustrated in the leaflet – and presumably that’snot even the whole range! The leaflet measures sixinches by four inches in its folded state (15 x 10 cms approx). As you can seeit is a three-fold leaflet, printed on both sides. The final image with thepaperback book should give you a sense of scale. The condition of the leafletis pretty good, considering that it is almost seventy years old. It is wholly intact, and remains nice and bright. It is not creased but it does have a little “waviness”to the top edge. It has the occasional small grubby mark and stain, as youmight expect. All the pages are shown in the hi-res images about though – so youshould be able to make an accurate judgement about the condition.
