Original Description:
Exceptionally rare and historically important, 1844 Henry Clay Presidential Campaign Stone Lithograph Political Cartoon titled “The Oregon and Texas Question”.
This fascinating and humorous Stone Lithograph is Medium Folio size and measures approx. 21” by 14” overall including its full, original margins. The Lithograph carries the mark of the publisher - A. Donnelly of New York City – and is signed in the plate by the artist Edward Williams Clay. ....
The Image of this wonderful Political Editorial Cartoon pictures a statesman like portrait of Henry Clay standing at the upper left hand corner of the scene before an image of a large American Flag and a plinth that reads “Constitution”. The remainder of the Image pictures a somewhat chaotic scene that includes many of the political “players” in the struggle to deal with the issues related to the Annexation of Texas and the acquisition of Oregon from Great Britain.
Included are images of John Tyler assuring Queen Victoria that “all shall be right” if she gives up Oregon and does not interfere with Texas. At the right the Queen wields the UK flag like a lance and proclaims her strength while he husband Prince Albert tends to their babies and smokes his pipe. At the left Andrew Jackson absconds with “Texas” (represented by an African American woman carrying the Lone Star Flag) on his back while being chased by Santa Anna who claims that he will never give up Texas without a fight.
To the right, British Envoy to the United States Richard Packingham attempts to calm Queen Victoria while John Calhoun attempts to calm the American Politicians assuring them that he and Packingham will settle the issues of Texas and Oregon. At the very center of this jumble there is Thomas Hart Benton wielding an American Flag (with a rather odd star pattern) like a lance pointed toward Queen Victoria while he demands “all or none” and embraces a Native American Woman who protests “What right have you to use me thus. You both pull different ways and between the two I shall be dismembered”. The wily Martin Van Buren half halfheartedly attempts to “hold back” Senator Benton while proclaiming “Pull away Colonel! I’ll back you if you succeed! If you don’t I’ll back out!”.
In a single Image the artist captures the complex and interconnected elements that framed the controversy regarding the territorial issues regarding Texas and Oregon at the time of the 1844 Presidential Election. As always, the art and insight of Edward Williams Clay was able to capture the essence of the political moment!!
This exceptionally rare and wonderful, Political Americana Editorial Cartoon Lithograph displays in excellent condition. The sheet is exceptionally clean overall and the Lithograph retains its full and original margins. We believe that it has never been framed. The Sheet has been expertly and professionally conserved using museum quality, archival materials and techniques by the world renowned experts of the Green Dragon Bindery of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. It has been deacidified and backed with inert, museum quality rice paper and the backing has repaired three edge tears – two affecting the margin areas only and one entering the Image area at the center of the right hand edge approx. 1”.
A exceptionally rare and original, 1844 Presidential Campaign Political Editorial Cartoon Stone Lithograph by Edward Williams Clay and published by A. Donnelly detailing the complex elements related to the annexation of Texas and the acquisition of the Oregon Territory and worthy of a place at the center of even the most advanced, Political Americana Collection!!
Be sure to check this seller’s other auctions for three other rare and historically important, American Political / Presidential Campaign Lithographs from the second quarter of the 19th century which are also being offered for sale this week on eBay!!
PLEASE NOTE: For the first time in 21 years, we are offering an item in our weekly eBay auction that does not start at $9.00. We have not made this decision without great consideration and consternation. We know that our regular bidders expect us to offer all items with a $9.00 opening bid and no reserve but we have made the decision to make an exception in this case. This 1844 Political Editorial Cartoon Lithograph is instead being offered for sale with no reserve but with a significant opening bid (though the opening bids is far below the actual value of this item). We have received an auction estimate of $2000 to $2500 for this Lithograph from one of the most important Auction Houses in the United States (we firmly believe that this outstanding example will exceed that high estimate at auction). We were originally planing to simply consign this Lithograph there but we decided to give our regular customers an opportunity to buy this simply fantastic Political Americana Print directly from us at a competitive auction price. Should it not receive at least an opening bid here on eBay, we will not be offering it again on eBay but will be sending it off to the auction house that has not only been enthusiastic about our consigning it there but also offered a significant advance on the final sale price. Overseas shipping is extra and cost will be quoted at bidders request. Massachusetts residents must add 6.25% sales tax. Important Notes about Shipping Charges: The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 "packing fee" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee. Please contact us if there are any issues regarding the cost of shipping.ATTENTION FRIENDS!!!We are pleased to announce the start up of a second weekly auction by WALNUTTS-2.0!!!
