In this letter he wishes to introduce Mrs Barnes to Josiah Henson, of the British American Institute, Dawn Milby, Canada West.
(historical note - the British American Insitute was a school started in 1842 by Josiah Henson, in the Dawn Settl...ement - a community of fugitive slaves who had escaped to Canada)
In this two-page letter, John Lily writes about what he had heard from Mr Henson: "that there were those whom Mr. Rice had clothed from head to foot, who had not honesty enough to get up and own it". He writes further about a man taken in that within 4 months the whole place was alive with lice. (If I am reading it correctly, it then relates that Mr Rice was able to place him at a home in Detroit for a dollar a week.)
(historical note - Almira Barnes was a staunch Abolitionist, and with the Liberty Party. She visited one of these communities of fugitive slaves in Canada - across Lake Erie from Cleveland. No doubt because of her intense interest in these matters, John Lily wanted to give her some details about the British American Institute).
So a nice item from the powerful days of the Abolistionists and fugitive slaves.
