'CITY OF HOPE MEDICALE CENTER - BROWN DERBY RESTAURANT' playing cards. Printed by Brown & Bigelow. USA. 1950
Published by the BROWN DERBY HOLLYWOOD RESTAURANT in LOS ANGELES.
Artist: JACK LANE
(The Brown Derby on Vine Street was the home of hundreds of caricatures of celebrities. Many of these caricatures were drawn by Mr. Jack Lane between 1947 and 1985. His economy of line
and sharpness of perception caught a personality in just a few brush strokes. Sketches began c...overing the dining room walls and celebrities used all sorts of strategems to be included in the "Wall of Fame" collection at The Brown Derby.
His talent for drawing faces was coupled with an even greater gift of gab. In the 20 minutes it took to draw someone, his engaging personality encouraged anyone to share a lifetime's worth of stories. Lane has written a book, A Gallery of Stars: The Story of the Hollywood Brown Derby Wall of Fame, describing his years as the resident caricaturist there.
The playing cards are a souvenir item created to providing funding and support to help the re-knowned  Los Angeles City of Hope cancer research hospital.
(Founded in 1913 by the Jewish Consumptive Relief Association, City of Hope is a world leader in the research and treatment of cancer, diabetes, and other serious diseases).

Caricatures of the Hollywood stars that frequented the Hollywood Brown Derby restaurant.
A "brown derby" is a bowler hat and the first Brown Derby, also known as the "Little Hat", was opened as a coffee shop/restaurant in February 1926 on Wilshire Boulevard. This was the only Derby that was actually built in the shape of a hat. In 1937, it was moved one block up the street. The restaurant became so popular with L.A.'s movie colony, that another Brown Derby was opened on Valentine's Day 1929: The Hollywood Brown Derby at 1628 Vine Street, near the corner of Hollywood and Vine. Other Brown Derby restaurants were later built in Beverly Hills and in East Hollywood (also known as Los Feliz) at Los Feliz Boulevard and Hillhurst.

The artwork on the cards (identical for each of the two decks) is as follows:
    •    Each of the four Aces has a black and white photo of one of the four Brown Derby restaurant or coffee shop locations: Hollywood, Los Feliz, Crenshaw Center, Beverly Hills
    •    The card backs have a full color photo of the Beverly Hills location
    •    Each of the four Kings has a black and white City of Hope photo showing the facilities & captioned: Medicine, Diagnosis, Research, and Nursery
    •    Each of the Two through Queen cards has a caricature of a movie star, Hollywood personality (e.g. Ralph Edwards), or Hollywood celebrity (e.g. Louella Parsons).  Other cards show:  Liberace; Rosalind Russell; Dorothy Lamour; Elizabeth Taylor; Red Skelton; Bob Hope; Clark Gable.  The caricatures are different on each suit so there are total of 44 different caracatures in the complete deck

52 cards, plus 2 Jokers (The Jokers read:
"To the Hollywood's Famous Stars... Thanks!  The City of Hope and the Brown Derby Hollywood express their combined appreciation to the geat stars whose, caricatures appear on these playing cards.  Their friendly cooperation to permit us to reproduce the caricaturs is in keeping with their traditional spirit of helpfulness for any worthy cause.  COPYRIGHT BROWN DERBY".
