Th...is is the original and scarce 1906 Tarpon Inn in Tarpon, Texas promotional booklet for their famous inn where tarpon fishing is their specialty.
The booklet tells about the importance of Tarpon fishing and the sport and difficulty in catching this fish with rod and reel.Mentions the famous fishing grounds of Aransas Pass where "King Fish or "Silver Cero"are also caught with King Fishing being a comparatively new sport at Aransas Pass.The booklet states "besides the unlimited supply of Tarpon and King Fish these waters abound with Jew or June Fish, Jack Fish, Red Fish, Trout, Mackerel, Pampano, Sheepshead and other varieties".Here also in the winter is the home of the Redhead, Bluebill, Pintail, Mallard and several other species of the duck family".
Booklet also says that surf bathing is unexcelled with the sandy beaches and the climate is perfect with the area being an ideal resort summer and winter.
The booklet goes on to say "to reach this great resort take The San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway from either San Antonio or Houston to Rockport.From this point boats leave every morning at 8 o'clock or special boats can be had at any time.A sail of two hours over a distance of fifteen miles brings you to the little village of Tarpon where the Silver King awaits you".The Tarpon is situated on the North end of Mustang Island overlooking the "pass".
"Hotel rates $2.50 to $4.00 per day.$14.00 per week and up".Mail every day except Sunday, telegraphic communication with hotel.A fleet of launches for King Fishing will be put on the coming season.Rates $4.00 and $6.00 per day.For further information apply to J.E.Cotter, Proprietor Tarpon Inn, Tarpon, Texas."
Then the final section of the booklet contains "Record of Tarpon Caught by Guests of The Tarpon Inn, Tarpon, Texas 1906".1, 573 Tarpon caught with rod and reel from March 25th to November 26th, 1906 by the following Sportsmen".The booklet then lists the fishermen alphabetically along with their city and state and number of tarpon caught.This list covers 7 pages.The last page of the list also lists "One Days' Record Catch for years 1901-1906 and the 1906 Records stating largest fish of the season weighed 210 pounds.The last two pages of the promotional booklet have ads for "San Antonio & Aransas Pass Railway".
The booklet is quite nostalgic and has some nice photos including one greenish-toned photo of "fishing grounds and Jetties at Aransas Pass Tarpon, Texas" and black and white photos of "fishermen off to the fishing grounds Tarpon, Texas, tarpon being unhooked alongside of Jetty, coming down head first from a high jump, Lady's catch one afternoon, an afternoons work of a novice, one days catch by J.R.Wainwright, Pittsburg, Pa.in suspense will we reach the beach, Red Fish caught on the beach, Tarpon Texas, J.R.Wainwright and J.E.Cotter with their limit of fifty ducks killed near Tarpon Inn actual time two hours and fifteen minutes and finally photo of a catch of King Fish, Tarpon, Texas.Great photos and very nostalgic promotional booklet, for the famous Tarpon Inn in Tarpon, Texas.
Actual booklet size is 4 3/4 by 6 3/4 inches.Condition is very good a nice, flat, tight, complete and essentially clean booklet.Some fading and slight rubbing to covers.Some light smudging and dustiness to covers.Title lettering and Tarpon fish illustration on front cover is still bright and attractive and the photo on the back cover of the Tarpon Inn is also still attractive.Some light spotting to back cover not affecting photo of Tarpon Inn.Light wear to cover edges and corners.Slight "rust bleeding" from staples affecting back cover right side edge.Both covers and all interior pages intact and attached.Some occasional light smudging and dustiness to interior pages, illustrations are essentially clean and attractive.Light smudging and dustiness to inside front and rear covers.The booklet is in quite nice and collectible condition.
