Otis Carter Formby King was granted a patent for a “calculating apparatus” in Aug 1921, although he started production in 1920 even before the patent was granted. From that time, until 1977, the Otis King Calculator was in continuous production. Early on there was an array of different Otis King models, with different scales for specific purposes. However, after the first year or two of production, only the models K and L survived, both of which continued to be ma...de until 1977 when production stopped. This Model K, with scale numbers 414 and 423, serial number N2164, was made in the late 1940s. The original box, quite tatty, and the original instructions are included. I think it is safe to assume that those instructions have been folded up in the box for at least 70 years, and they required…persuasion…to lay flat on my scanner.
This Otis King has some wear to the black paint on the cursor and nickel plating on the body, but not bad at all. The scales are completely unmarked except on the upper scale, 423, a 2-cycle logarithmic scale, where someone has highlighted the word “ONE” which marks the middle of the scale.
This slide rule is from the collection of Robert K. (“Bob”) Otnes, PhD, one of the founding members of the Oughtred Society and the original editor of the Journal of the Oughtred Society. It is being sold by the Oughtred Society on his behalf.
