The Jacket retains what appear to be its original hook and eye closures – the “hooks” being made of metal and the “eyes” being thread.

The Jacket offered here is unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period. It is NOT a reproduction or modern recreation but an original Cree Fringed Hide Jacket crafted in the fourth quarter of the 19th century. This very rare and wonderful, ca1880’s Plains Cree Embroidery Decorated Hide Jacket is in very good condition. All of the hide elements are well preserved – supple and sound with some soiling as can be seen in the scans below and a stain at the right hand cuff that causes the hide to be stiffened and somewhat deformed (see the detail scan below). There is some minor loss and some fading to the stunningly beautiful silk embroidery as can be seen in the scans below. The rawhide fringe is also very well preserved. We mention these minor flaws for completeness but none significantly detract from the beauty of this outstanding Cree Hide Jacket.
