A letter that belonged to a Marine named Clarence E. Sutton. This Marine won the Medal of Honor for his conduct during the Boxer Rebellion in China. This is a printed or typed letter written to him by Marine Smedley D. Butler. It is dated during the Boxer Rebellion, July 27, 1900 Tientsin, China. In on area he says, Please allow me to express to you my appreciation of your gallant conduct in assisting me to the rear on Ju...ne 13th, during the battle of Tientsin, after I had been wounded As your action was entirely voluntary I hope that you will be rewarded, and if I can , at any time, assist you please call upon me.................(Sgd) Smedley D. Butler......... I think Butler got the month wrong as I think the Battle of Tientsin was in the month of July not June 13th. I think this was a letter that was typed or printed by Clarence Sutton around the time period from an original letter Butler sent as near the bottom it says, This was given to me by Captain Butler now, he is the son of Representative Butler of Pennsylvania.Smedley D. Butler was a Marine who won the Medal of honor twice, and was believed to have prevented a coup against President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and later wrote an anti-war book titled, War Is A Racket.I currently have other items listed that belonged to Clarence Sutton. The letter has wear and stain marks.
