Original Description:
One of the rarities and much sort after mineral species from Franklin. Here were have a very rich specimen of bementite. Franklin is the type locality of bementite. It is a manganese silicate hydroxide mineral and was named for Clarence Sweet Bement by George Augustus Koenig in 1887. Bement assembled the finest mineral collection in the USA. He also assembled the finest collection of U.S. coins and was interested in a variety of collectibles. Bement had a keen interest in Fra...nklin, New Jersey minerals from whence his namesake was discovered. The bementite is the massive,  pale tan-brown material with a dull to semi-vitreous luster. Embedded along with the bementite are spots of white coarse calcite scattered throughout the specimen. This is an excellent, rich specimen and would be ideal for the species collector.Dimensions are 9.5x11.1x8cm - 3¾x4¼x3in. Most of the minerals from the Franklin and Sterling Hill zinc mining district fluoresce under shortwave ultraviolet light. The shortwave wavelength is 254nm or otherwise known as UV C. Always read the description carefully to determine if the main mineral of interest for a particular specimen will fluoresce.
