The Pope was in critical condition when he arrived at the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome. He late...r attributed his survival and recovery to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The 13th of May is also the anniversary of the first apparition of Mary to the shepherd children at Fatima, Portugal in 1917. While John Paul II respected the importance of the messages from Fatima, he did not make the Fatima revelations a priority in his papacy.
The famous International Statue of Our Lady of Fatima was on tour at the time of the assassination attempt and arrived in Rome shortly after. John Paul was recovering in the hospital when the statue of the Virgin was leaving Rome in a helicopter. The pilot later explained that as the helicopter passed over the Gemelli clinic, a sudden gust of wind pushed the helicopter back, forcing it to hover over the hospital. John Paul believed that this was the Virgin letting him know she was protecting him. He ordered the documents from Fatima to be sent to him from the Vatican archives. From then on, he made the Fatima revelations an integral part of his papacy and promoted devotion to the Virgin. He even added another mystery to the rosary in Her honor.
Relics from the cassock were taken and consecrated on the day of St. John Paul II's canonization, 27 April 2014. The cassock is said to be powerful and many have attributed healing and miracle changes in the lives of those who have come in contact with it. It is currently on permanent display in a church in Krakow. Comes with sealed certificate of authenticity.
