This auction is for a vintage (almost antique) 1920s press photo of magician and escape artist Harry Houdini. This photo was used at least three times by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (Seattle P-I) newspaper throughout the years, starting in 1923. There are rubber stampings, typewritten info, and writing in both pen and pencil on the back side. There are also a couple of small partial newspaper clippings pasted there. There are several dates rubber-stamped on the back. The first date ...is FEB 20 1923. The back states that this photo was “Advance for P.I. Feb. 25 Comes to Moore Mch 4”. Internet research confirmed that Houdini was scheduled to appear at Seattle’s Moore Theater on March 4, 1923. The other two dates stamped are much later (DEC 3 1974 and NOV 1 1986). There is a rubber stamping that reads TO BE RETURNED TO PHOTOGRAPH & PRESS [word illegible], PALACE THEATRE BLDG, NEW YORK CITY. Photo measures approx. 5” x 7”.

Photo surface has black crop marks from the newspaper production department along with black ink smudges as you can see. Photo surface also has a couple of small white worn patches which affect the background but not Houdini himself. Back side has all the writing, stamping, typing, clippings noted above along overall smudgy soil and small brown paper remnants. NO weird or musty odors. The red “moonchildbooks” blurb does not appear on the actual photo.
