Up for auction is a rare medieval vellum legal manuscript of Justinian's Digest, in Latin, Italy (Bologna), early 14th century. This leaf contains several red/blue initials and commentary surrounding the legal text in the center. There are also marginal notations at the very bottom. Justinian's Digest represents an early codification of Roman law, and the city of Bologna (where this leaf originated) provided the venue for one of the most prestigious law schools of th...e Middle Ages...the University of Bologna. This leaf, having been recovered from an early book-binding, does have condition issues as seen in the pictures. It measures approx. 11 3/4 x 8 1/4 inches.
