The origin is attributed to the jewels of the boulonnais and the calaisis at the origin of the Spanish occupation, in the sixteenth century. The Boulogne cross is a filigred cross. She wa...s offered by the groom at the time of the wedding: the couple was going to buy the "bet" that the woman would wear at each event, with her traditional regional costume. They then went to "dorlots " (which gave the verb pampered = be covered with gold, in the old times). The traditional boulonnais costume consisted of a silk skirt gathered in the back, a casquin lined with lace, a fringed shawl, a lace CAP in aureole called "Sun" and silk mittens. Like any regional jewel, the Boulogne cross is closely linked to the traditional costume, which experienced its hours of glories in the nineteenth century. The origin of this adornment is therefore certainly Spanish. The folklorist Lionel Bonnemère, who acquired a Boulogne cross on the pilgrimage of Notre-Dame de Boulogne in 1900, notices that this cross, of Belgian origin, is the model of the large Flemish altar crosses. On the other hand, the watermark is an Arabic technique transmitted to the Spaniards who occupied the County of Flanders until the seventeenth century. And here, this cross is the heiress of a double culture, revamped in the sauce of the North! The Boulogne cross is part of the so-called "North seamen's" adornment, i.e. fishermen's and sailors ' wives. It should be emphasized that the seafarers ' social group was very particular and this peculiarity existed in every fishermen's town: this microsociety lived in its neighbourhood and had its own codes. His people were only dating and marrying each other. Each community had its own rules and uses, with no connection to the rest of the population and no desire to integrate. It was noted that this atypical lifestyle existed as early as the eighteenth century. The Boulogne cross is recognized at first glance: it is made of yarns, wound on themselves and thus forming motifs, according to the technique of the watermark. For information, a gram of gold can give a kilometer of yarn! We also find this cross made of silver, embellished with half-pearls of coloured glass. The general shape of the cross is approaching that of a rhombus. What is paradoxical is that it is both fine, elegant and Gracile when viewed closely, it seems rather massive and heavy by looking at it from afar. Approaching, it is easy to realize that the wound wires imitate ropes, dear to sailors. You will also notice scallops at all four angles. The jewel ends with a Bell, a Pearl or a small natural Baroque bead. This cross is on a rather long chain, like a huge necklace, called "witch " with a clasp in the shape of a barrel, with enamelled pans. The clasp would reproduce a float of fishing nets.
