Being offered is a very nice old antique 19th century Visayan tenegre sword. This sword measures 26” long when measured in a straight line in its scabbard. The handle is wood with detailed carving and a lovely patina. It is faceted. It has lovely floral carving to the sides. Has a lovely monster pommel with grinning mouth. Discs are carved around the side and back of the head. It has been mounted in brass strips and plates. There is one... brass strip missing fro. The upper lip as evidenced by the small nail holes. The wood carved discs each have a small brass nail. The eyes have brass oval plates and the very top of the head with an oval brass plate and then the washer over the peen. High brass ferrule faceted the brass having lovely patina. The guard is wood which has been covered around the outer edge in brass, the bottom side with scalloped edge decoration. The blade is very well forged. It is laminated. You can see the layering at the forte of the blade and also along most of the beveled edges. You can also see a zone where the edge has been heat treated. The blade has some grinding marks on one side and some microscopic pits here and there but overall a very nice blade. The entire spine decorated in X motif. The scabbard is very nice. It is wood, showing a lovely patina, with a very high carving with brass plates and discs to the top. This would have held a suspension rope at one time. There is a broke off section at the top of the scabbard. The majority of the scabbard wrapped in brass bands, the reverse side with lovely interlocking design. The toe of the scabbard is missing a brass plate but the outline and mounting holes still remain. The blade fits a bit snug in the scabbard but goes all the way in. A very nice and old Filipino Visayan tenegre sword. The brass plates to the well carved handle, the nicely laminated blade and decorative scabbard are all great features not commonly found on these.
