Purchased by Mr. Edward Dahl in Ceylon and shipped to the American Embassy in Karachi - export license January 17, 1951 included. I was told that it was on display in the embassy, along with another chest purchased and imported on the export license. ... 1602: On 20 March, the United East India Company/ VOC or Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie, often referred to by the British as the Dutch East India Company, was established. At its’ height, 1637, it was valued at $7.9 Trillion adjusted for inflation
Based on its’ size and beauty this magnificent campaign chest was surely made for an important member of the VOC and judging from dents and dings – my guess is a ship’s captain.
If you like your antiques associated with history this is for you - from a VOC Ship Captain (?), to the American Embassy, to you.
