Offered here is a unique opportunity for collectors to acquire this rare, superb and original colonial Australian bullock bell from renowned Queensland maker A. Ormond.
Make no mistake, this ain't no cow bell. It is a huge old working bullock bell, complete with the bullock team's owner initials of J. C. on the shoulder. I have no knowledge of who JC was (perhaps someone does?) but it is definitely of historical significance to have those initials on ...the bell, a bit like the DH Dennis Hughes Dinny Bells.
The bell is in excellent antique condition. There are two brass welds on one side that could be from original production, or possibly a later repair done while the bell was still at work. The overall brass braising is worn yet extremely attractive (better than pictures show).
Front and back of the bell are stamped vertically, ORMOND. The original rolled steel donger also appears to be marked.
This bell is a colossus, and as can be seen in the pictures will virtually fit an upright can of soft drink in its mouth.
The overall dimensions are, 20cm to top of bell, 23cm to top of staple. The mouth is 13 x 11.5cm, which would swallow most other cow bells. The shoulder is 17cm across. The bell weight is 2.2kg.
Collectors; you can buy this one, or you can wait 20 years for the next one, if you're lucky. :)
This bell is a true and worthy museum piece.
