This large two quart coffee pot dates from the middle of the 18th century and is probably the earliest of its kind that I have been lucky enough to come across. The large size would suggest that it was used in the new coffee houses that were rapidly springing up in London at the time and which were used by wealthy tradesmen and writers. Also known as 'tavern' pots they were made by hand with large hand cut dovetailed seams that run from the top to the base, partially covered with the s...hield shaped spigot that secures its original wooden handle. The cover has a brass fitting knob and is pin hinged to the body of the pot. There are no knocks to the walls of this ancient pot and the colour of the old copper is simply stunning after a life of over two and a half centuries. It is 10 1/2 inches tall with a base diameter of almost 7 inches and a rim diameter of 4 1/2 inches. There is a photograph of an identical pot on page 276 of the book called 'Domestic Metalwork 1640 - 1820' by Rupert Gentle. This is a pot of museum quality and I'm certain that it won't disappoint any buyer
