This sampler belonged to my mother-in-law ; she found at a yard sale in the Illinois/Indiana area. The date is Jan 30, 1799. Frances James. Looks to be in the original frame.It reads: Thou turne at man O Lord to dust of wich first was made and when He spake the word return he instantly obey"I asked my husband to look into more about Frances James and here's what he had to share:Assuming Frances was born between 1782 and 1792 (which would have made her approximate...ly 7 to 17 years old when the sampler was made) helps narrow the search somewhat. Here are the stronger possibilities: Frances James, born about 1781 to Jude and Ruth James. Died 18 Mar 1864 in Warren, Worcester Co. MA. Frances Leavitt James, born 9 Oct 1791 in Scituate, Plymouth Co. MA to William and Molly James. Frances James, born about 1783 to Rollings and Ellen (nee Bowles) James. Married to Richard Ballard (1781-ca 1848). Died 1863 probably in Darke Co. OH. Frances(Fanny) James, born 14 Jun 1791 in Franklin Co. VA to Samuel and Martha Patsy(nee Sneed) James. Married 9 Sep 1811 in Merce Co. KY to William Bowman. Died 6 Nov 1858 in Germantown, Bracken Co. KY. Frances James, born 8 Nov 1784 I Gloucester Co. VA, the daughter of Thomas and Betsy (nee Davis) James. She married Absalom White (1777-1855) on 22 Oct 1807, and gave birth of 8 known children. She died 15 Jul 1860 in Mathews Co. VA. Interesting fact: her second youngest child was George Washington White (1823-1897), who died in Potomac, Vermilion Co. IL (the county immediately sought of Iroquois County).”
