Original Description:
Antique Native American Haida or Tlingit Drum and Mallet. This drum has a wide circular wood Frame. Around the top of the drum is stretched animal skin which covers half of the sides of the wood. The wood is painted black. There is a tear which measures ¾”on the bottom edge of the skin on the side of the drum. The wood frame has holes and the animal skin and the wood frame has a basting stitch surrounding the upper part of the drum. On the sides of the drum are the ends of the lacin...g, probably to be held in the hand. The bottom of the drum has a leather, thin-skin cross motif. The top of the drum has a center black-edged circle. Around the circle are black-edged triangles and the main motif is the sun. The black edged triangles represent the rays of the sun. The wood frame is red cedar and the drum is of the Pacific Northwest Coast Native American. The mallet is wood with a hide covered head. About half of the hide on the head is gone. It has the original rawhide wrapping. I have owned this drum for 50+ years & have had it evaluated as to cleaning/restoring. I’ve been told that the colors would be far more vibrant with a professional cleaning. Please contact me if you need more detailed pictures.
