Antique LAWN BOWLS Bowling Balls, Silver 1891 TITWOOD Lawn & Tennis Club Glasgow
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:3689118 | UPC: Does not apply |
This pair of bowls is from 1891, with one side of each decorated with an ornately engraved silver plaque reading:
"TITWOOD BOWLING & TENNIS CLUB - CHAMPIONSHIP PRIZE FOR BOWLING WON BY FRANCIS HAY, ESQ 1891".
The other side of each ball has the smaller silver plaque engraved with the bowl number "1" or "2".
This would have been from one of the first tournaments at the Titwood Bowling & Tennis Club, as it was founded in 1890.
The winner, Francis Hay, apparently lived just a few blocks away from the club, also on Glencairn Drive.
The balls are made of heavy Lignum Vitae wood, as are the accompanying stands. The plaques are silver, probably sterling, though they do not have hallmarks. I see no indication of any wear through the silver, so I feel fairly confident they are not plate. The photos that look otherwise are actually just showing a haze of tarnish, not copper.
Condition of the balls is typical for this age, with the original varnish finish well worn and revealing the natural wood on much of the surface. They are not chipped up or cracked, however. Their appearance in normal indoor lighting is fine, they just look antique as of course they are. With flash photography though some of my pics look horrid as the varnished & unvarnished areas reflect the harsh light completely differently. There is one small dent to the larger silver plaque on one ball.
The stands are also made of lignum vitae and there is cracking and some chipping to the turned edges. The top 1/3 of one of them has been reglued somewhat unevenly. With the bowl sitting on it however it is not so noticeable.
Each ball has impressed marks "TAYLOR" and "GLASGOW".
The balls are approximately 5" in diameter (12cm). With the stands, the presentation is 8.8" tall.
