Considered talismanic art, (Art that possesses protective power), Magic Scrolls were commissioned by individuals suffering from various ailments. The scribes who made them were often Christian priests who customized the scroll to the sick individual’s needs. After first sacrificing a sheep, t...he maker cut several strips of skin length wise to match the height of the owner. Next, the scribe divided the scroll into separate areas for images & text. The text, written in black ink and a reed pen, contained a prayer related to the ailment. The owner kept the scroll close to him or her at all times to avert illness and danger through prayer. This particular 19th Century scroll is comprised of three separate sections that have been stitched together. The language is Ge’ez, the liturgical language of Ethiopia and measures approximately 75 inches or 6feet and 3 inches. The two images appear to be those of guardian angels.
