THE FLORIDA HIGHWAYMEN - ALFRED HAIR 1941 - 1970 Last Great American Art Movement
Item History & Price
Hair is considered the leader and catalyst who set the tone for the group through the 1960's. In 1970 the group lost its charismatic leader when Hair was killed in a bar room brawl at age 29.
The HIGHWAYMEN were mostly self-taught painters who mentored each other. Excluded from the traditional world of art shows and galleries the HIGHWAYMEN painted on inexpensive upon board or masonite and framed their paintings with crown molding brushed with gold or silver paint to antique them.
They packed these paintings in the trunk of their cars and sold them door- to -door.Hair was one of the original 26 HIGHWAYMEN who died much too young.
Condition: Signed in lower left-hand corner as well as stamped in three places on the back. Painting and frame are as found, in very good condition but could most likely use a good cleaning.
