DESCRIPTION.Here is an original nineteenth century French School oil on canvas, signed and dated 'A. Bergnier, 86' at the lower left corner, depicting large sai...lboats and smaller rowing boats sailing in calm waters near a harbour town. The work is large, measuring 20" × 32" (50.5cm × 81cm) for the canvas alone and 26.5" × 38.5" (67cm × 98cm) when including its antique gilt frame.
The work is in a good to fair antique condition. The canvas remains unlined and shows light craquelure and stretcher marks, varnish yellowing, small areas of paint loss and retouching. The frame is from the same period as the painting and has a fluted cove design with oak leaves and acorns motif. It is in a good antique condition with losses to edges, most notably at the lower left, together with other minor losses, some signs of restoration and various other marks to the surface.
