Rare - Grant Brothers Sewing Machine - Circa 1870, Hand Crank, England Style
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:329145 | Original/Reproduction: Antique Original |
Maker: Grant Brothers & Co. |
Dating: My research shows these were only produced from 1869-1875, so that's a pretty tight window (4-10 years after the civil war ended - in 1865).
This machine has been refurbished, ie, taken completely apart, thoroughly cleaned, & all rust removed. The cast iron frame was repainted, Decorations applied, & a clear coat finish ap...plied at the end for protection. All bare metal parts were cleaned & polished, then reassembled & oiled.
All gears turn, needle bar travels as intended, & the feed dogs go up & down as intended.
Any item of this age is going to show nicks & dings, as well as some pitting, which can be seen in the photos. This machine came to me in pretty rough shape, & some pieces were fabricated to allow for a thread holder, & a new gear was used to replace the missing gear on the bottom. I don't have a needle for it, & I suspect it's still missing a piece or 2, but as I have nothing to go by, it's hard to say for sure. (I have never seen this style mechanism before, & I'm no mechanic).
There is a hairline crack in one small area of the sewing plate, which can not expand any further. It is on the back side, from the needle plate hole to the back, & is practically invisible if you don't know where it is. Please feel free to examine the photos - which are not edited, to see if you can spot it.
Measurements: * 9" Wide (Hand crank & knob protrudes 1.75" beyond the base, = total clearance width of 10.75"). * 5" Deep * 7" Tall = top of Machine (Plus 1.5" of hardware stands atop that, = total clearance height of 8.5"). * Hand crank wheel is 5" across.* Weight is 8-9 lbs with the box.
This one's gorgeous, working or not. I hope you feel the same, & good luck bidding. : )
