AntiquePalais Royal Mother of Pearl Needle Case French* Circa 1820 This needlecase is French and carved of solid motherof pearl in the traditional rectangular shape. Itis inlaid on one side with an enameled gold pansy. Thisrepresents the French word pensée which is the French word for bothpansy and thought or sentiment, sort of a 'thinking of you' message. It was once part of a Palais Royal workbox.
This piece has a veryskilled and unusual r...epair.Someone has engraved a floral design on the top front and added a layerof carvedmother of pearl flowers. The mother of pearl under this addition ischipped which is why I'm sure it's a repair. It was done a long timeago though as I can't imagine anyone doing it now. Even if you couldfind someone with this level of skill, the cost would probably be morethan the needle case is worth. Thecondition is otherwise excellent and itfitstogether snugly. Itmeasures 3" long by 5/8" wide and the mother of pearl isveryluminous. A needle case of similar form is shownin a workbox on p. 50 of Nerylla Taunton's book Antique Needlework Tools andEmbroideries. ThePalais Royal was an arcade of shops within a wing of a former royalpalace in Paris. The shops opened in the late 1780s and housed thefinest French artisans selling only the highest quality goods. Items ofmother of pearl and precious metals were specialties there.
