After more than 40 yearsof collecting, the time has come to thin down
on my antique-sewing-machinecollection and ephemera. Please check
for new items each week. They will range from thesuper-rare to the more

I’ve had this machine forabout 40 years and still can’t get over the amazing
condition it’s in.
The machine is alsosomething rather special.
It’s made by the RoyalSewing Machine Company which had its ...factory in
Birmingham in the 1860s/’70s.
It produced a largerange of commoner models, including the Shakespear
and the Challenge, but wouldalso produce customised branded machines
for special, regular customers.
One of these was theLondon firm of Smith & Co. which had its showrooms
in the prestigious EdgwareRoad and Charles Street in Soho, London.
Smith ordered aspecialist machine based on the Company’s popular
Shakespear model butstipulated that it had to be specially decorated, heavy
with gold leaf andhand-painted embellishments, and that it should be called
The Monarch.
How many machines wereproduced I guess we will never know. This is the
only one I’ve seen and heardof and the condition is simply amazing.
The nickel plating isjust like the day it left the factory around 150 years ago.
The decoration is 99%complete and there’s not a touch of rust anywhere.
It turns freely andeven has a needle.
The bobbin and shuttleare, of course, present.
Some dimensions: The machine’s mahoganybase measures 10 inches x 7 and the machine
stands 11 inches tall.
Surely a machine destinedto be the highlight of any important collection. COURIER SHIPPING:
