Ye wandring travellers that pas this wayStand still a while, these agonies surveyAnd on result of serious thoughts declareIf ever sorrows might with mine compareBut God in mercy hath decreed this cupMost willingly, therefore I drink it up~~~~~~~This is to let you know and seeWhat care my parents took on meThis work in hand my friends may haveWhen I am dead and in my grave
The middle section of the linen is stitched with the following words which has a man standing legs akimbo and a small dog next to a windmill on the left side and two floral urns, a cluster of flowers and a crown to the right
Rich lords in there robes can as dirtily dealGold in handleing will stick to there fingers like metal
There is a row of various motifs beneath this section of stitch work - flowers, diamonds, birds, crowns, a flower basket and floral urn. The left side area of the linen beneath the motifs is stitched with a bird inside a pergola with small spot motifs to its left and a charming image of a row of four sailing ships to its right. Each ship has its name above with the largest being the Lord Nelson with Nancy, Jason and Spitfire to follow. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central two storey red house with flowers and diamonds above its roof. There is a garden area to the front lined with trees and further trees, flowers, a stag, flowers, a fruit tree and squirrel to the left side. There is a wonderful image to the right of the house of a huntsman who has the words - Tally O, tally O, tally OOO, hark forward, huzza, tally O - coming out of his mouth, the words with trees, an owl and dogs beneath them. There is a row of dogs running across the bottom edge of the linen with trees to their left and a stag to their right. The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering strawberry border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, fairly dark with general grubbiness, particularly around the edges and the top and bottom sections of stitch work. The colours of the silks are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Elizabeth first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is damage to the linen around the edges and top left corner, the latter having resulted in some stitch loss to the strawberry border and the first letter of Elizabeth's name. There are also a few small areas of damage to the field of the linen and a right angled tear running through the ship Jason approximately two inches across and one inch down. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable. The top and bottom edges of the linen also retain remnants of its original edging cloth which is frayed.Measures 13 1/2" x 20 3/4"
