EarlyAntique Silver Sewing Egg & Thimble Germanyor Netherlands * Circa 1780 This antiquesolid silver egg is a veryspecial and early one. It unscrews inthe middle and holds an early brass thimble and some tiny hand madecoil top steel pins. The more pointed end also unscrews and hold asmall piece of bee's wax.The egg has engine turned zig zag engraving on the sides and testssolid 800+/1000 pure silver.Thecondition is excellent with no damage and only a li...ttle wear where itwould have been gripped in the center to unscrew. Itmeasures 1 3/8" long and almost 1" in diameter and everythingscrews together perfectly. It dates to c. 1770-90 and is in the same style and heavy weight as thesilver compendiums made at the same time. I've shown it next to one onp. 17 of Kay Sullivan'sbook Needlework Toolsand Accessories - A Dutch Tradition. Shesays that the compendiums were probably made in Germany and importedinto the Netherlands. She also shows this thimble, in plate 35 on p.62. The egg weighs a very solid 25.5 grams. Thethimble is an early Dutch brass example of about the same date. It isalso in great condition with no holes, repairs or other damage. It'sabout anAmerican size 8 (15 mm diameter opening).
