A VERNACULAR PHOTOGRAPHY ALBUM WITH 100 IMAGES OF THEDESTRUCTION WROUGHT BY THE GREAT HURRICANE OF 1938 (1938HURRICANE). In September 1938, a Category 3 hurricanestruck Long Island and New England with little warning, killing almost 700people and causing hundreds of millions of dollars of property damage. Photography album. 1938-1940. Lancaster, Massachusetts. A photograph album compiled from 1938 to1940; it contains approximately 187 black and white ...vernacularphotographs. The content is divided intothirds; there are over 100 images showing hurricane destruction, there arealmost 50 photographs showing a ski contest, and the last portion is of apatriotic parade. The hurricane photosare stamped with an autumn 1938 date on the back, and were taken in theLancaster, Massachusetts region. Theyshow toppled trees, wrecked houses, ruined transportation, smashed businesses, andother forms of destruction. The skiimages, taken in 1940, show Alpine scenes of mountains, skiers, crowds, andmore. The parade images were likelytaken on Memorial Day 1940, on the eve of America’s entry into World WarII. The photographs measure 4” x 2 ½”and are in fine condition. The overallcondition of the album is very good.
