Rex H&L York, PA Miller High Eagle Fire Helmet Late 1800 ' S

Leather fire helmet, 8" high eagle, from the York, Pennsylvania fire company "Rex Hook and Ladder." This is very much a delicate display piece, as the leather is very thin and as you can gather from the photos, as separated/disintegrated from the helmet wire. I believe this to be a Fred J. Miller helmet from New York, as evidenced by the brim design (there is a shot from a helmet guide I had lying around). The number "54" is painted on the underside, and this appears ...to be applied much later than the helmet was in use. The metal shield/front says "Rex, 1, York PA, 1886." It is attached to the helmet, but not very firmly. I'm guessing it is a size 7 1/8 (surprisingly large for this era).

After purchasing an over priced SFFD helmet right here on fabulous eBay, I got the order from the Chief (currently making dinner in the kitchen) to "thin the herd." I have posted pix on Facebook and hope this lid finds an appropriate home where it can be appreciated by someone who has a connection to the York, PA fire service. All sales are final, and PayPal is the only payment method. I will insure for the full payment price (regardless of what eBay will say at the end of the auction). Very low reserve in hopes anyone who really wants this can get it for a price that is not outrageous (saw some bloke talk about wanting $3K for a 12 comb. I think I can get a used Toyota for that!).
