Exceptionally rare and wonderful, 1887 Volume of Mounted Photographs of the Most Celebrated American and British Yachts including the America’s Cup Defenders and Challengers of the 1880’s taken by David Mason Little. This Volume of some of the first and historically important American Sporting Yacht Photographs is titled “Instantaneous Marine Views” by David Mason Little.
This outstanding Volume measures approx. 10 1/2” by 7 3/4” contains appr...ox. 70 Photographs each measuring 9 1/4” by 7 ¼ and mounted on linen pages. Each Photograph has a tissue title sheet identifying the Yacht pictured and in most cases the year the Photograph was taken. There is a one page, printed introduction detailing the history of the Image and the importance of David Mason Little to the development of Yacht Race Photography.
Included are numerous Photographs of The America’s Cup Defenders of the 1880’s including the Puritan, Priscilla, Atlantic, Mayflower and Volunteer. Also included are numerous views of the America’s Cup Challengers Thistle, Galatea and Genest. Of special interest are three Photographs of the 1885 America’s Cup Race - the first Photographs of an America’s Cup Cup Race in progress.
There are also dozens of “Instantaneous Views” of the finest and most Celebrated Yachts of the Golden Age of American Yachting.
The introduction reads in part: “In 1882, soon after the introduction of dry plates in photography, David mason Little… began experimenting with apparatus designed to secure pictures of objects in motion. These pictures 9the photographs in this Volume) were taken in 1882 from various positions along our New England coast and in 1884 and 1885 of the off Marblehead, Massachusetts in which four America’s Cup Defenders, the Puritan, Mayflower, Priscilla and Atlantic… sailed twice around a triangular course in half a gale of wind, in brilliant sunshine and over whitecapped waves.
The Yacht Race Photographs of David Mason Little represent one of the most historically important collections of images of their type in existence. In 1882 Little published a pioneering Volume titled “Instantaneous marine Studies” which included a number of his photographs printed in heliotype but we have been unable to uncover ANY information about the Volume offered which contains approximately 70 of the actual photographs that were taken by Little. We have found auction records of a few individual Photograph by Little but have been unable to uncover ANY information or record of the Volume offered here in any Museum or Library Collection. Any information about this amazing Album would be greatly appreciated.
The Volume is bound in its original and pebbled, limp leather covers with gold gilt lettering on the front cover that reads “Instantaneous Marine Views Taken by David Mason Little”. The cover is worn at the edges and partially split at the spine but still attractive. The Interior pages and Photographs are exceptionally well preserved – all of the tissue titles are present and also well preserved. All of the Photographs exhibit sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality. Each and every one of these 70 Image would make fantastic display pieces with a quality matting and framing. Individual yachting Photographs by David Mason Little have sold in the $200 to $400 range and his heliotype Volume is usually offered in the #00 to $600 range and that Volume does not include any of the America’s Cup Yachts 9and no real photographs).
