Very rare and wonderful, 1893 Volume of Photographic Plates by Henry G. Peabody of Important American Sporting Yachts titled “Representative American Yachts / A Collection of One Hundred Views / Photographed by Henry G. Peabody”. Boston, 1893. Published by The Heliotype Printing Company. This very rare Volume contains 100 exceptionally high quality, full page, heliotype style photographic images of both sail and steam powered yachts. Included are a number of the America’s Cup Def...ender Yachts including Volunteer, Mayflower, Puritan, Atlantic and Priscilla.
This outstanding Volume measures approx. 13 3/4” by 10 3/4” and begins with 24 pages of text giving detailed descriptions of the 100 Yachts pictured in the Volume. The following 100 leaves are printed on a high quality, heavy weight paper stock with a single Yacht Portrait per leaf printed on one side only. The Photographs capture each ship under full sail often cutting through the water at great speed. These are the great yachts of Yachting’s Golden Age which are made all the more impressive by the outstanding artistry of the photographer.
Henry G. Peabody's distinguished career as a view photographer began in Boston in the 1880s, when for a short period he specialized in marine views. Peabody and Nathaniel L. Stebbins photographed many of the same yacht races in the early 1890s, though Peabody's work has been described as having a more calculated "artistic quality."
The Volume is bound in its original, gilt lettered, textured and stamped brown leather. The binding is tight, sound and intact with some surface wear to the leather. The Spine has been repaired a long time ago with a cloth strip covering the spine and both the front and rear hinges. All edges are gilt. The interior text pages are complete, tight and generally well preserved with some light, uniform age toning and with some edge chipping to the front free end paper and the first few leaves. The photographic plates are printed on heavy weight, high quality stock and the printing process is of the very highest quality. All plates are present and very well preserved - a handful have some scattered light foxing and soiling but the vast majority are clean and crisp. There are no tears, repairs or physical damage of any kind. The Plates are stunningly beautiful and each would make a simply outstanding display with a quality matting and framing.
