MID 19TH CENTURY FLORAL SPRAY, CASTLE & MOTIF SAMPLER BY BETSEY CLEMENS - C. 1845

Original Description:
Early 19th century sampler by Betsey Clemens. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1845 or slightly earlier. Worked in silk on a close weave gauze, this sampler is just stunning with very fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central strip of grass with a tree at the middle which has a smaller tree, gatehouse/folly building and flower bushes to its left and right. There is a small flower basket ab...ove the central tree with a star on each side followed by a floral urn, whilst the buildings have a flower basket, fruit basket and crowned cherub at their side. The middle section of the gauze is stitched with an exquisite carnation basket with Betsey's name above which has an crowned angel hovering  to the left and right, a tulip, crown, floral urn and rosebush basket at the side of each. The carnation basket is flanked by a floral urn, flowers, flower basket, strawberry basket and bird with a strawberry on either side of its topmost bloom. The lower section of the gauze is stitched at the centre with a splendid floral spray with a castle on either side which has a small tree and flower basket on each side. Each castle then has a butterfly, trio of tulips, flower and two birds in flight above them. The whole piece is then surrounded by an intricate arcaded floral border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places from where certain colours of the silks have bled. The colours of the silks are good with the aforementioned bleeding. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Betsey first stitched it. There are also several areas of neat restoration work, the largest being around the urn to the right of the central carnation basket. There is a much smaller area by the left side fruit basket in the top section of stitch work - one by the right side folly building - three by the angel to the right of Betsey's name - and one in the outer flowers in the floral spray directly opposite the flag on the right side castle. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are a few small areas of damage to both the edges and field of the gauze. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable. Measures 17 1/4" x 19 3/4"
