Company History:TheTallassee Manufacturing Company was a large mill built in 1844 as acotton mill and was situated on the Tallapoosa River, a shortdistance above Montgomery, Alabama. Benjamin H. Micou (stockcertificate is hand signed) was president and managing agent of theTallassee Manufacturing Company No. 1, with its office in Montgomery, Alabama. Also hand signed as company secretary by Confederate GeneralBirkett D. Fry (see short bio below); General Fry later becamepresident of the company. The Tallassee Manufacturing Companyoperateda cotton mill from 1844 until 1861, when the Civil War began. Duringthe war, Colonel Gorgas (CSA Flag) ordnance chief, had theConfederatecarbine shop that was located in Richmond, Virginia moved toTallassee, Alabama into the Tallassee Manufacturing Company mill inthe spring of 1864 as war threatened the Richmond, Virginia armory. The carbine armory within the Tallassee Armory (within the TallasseeManufacturing Company mill) was the only Confederate armory notdestroyed by Federal forces during the Civil War. The mill and armoryescaped destruction during the Civil War. War ended before the plantneared its goal of producing 6, 000 carbines per year. In 1864, the UnionGeneral Rousseau's raid bypassed it. In 1865, Union forces underGeneral Wilson (USA Flag) misled by a faulty map, marched 10 mileseast of the armory. A documented quote from company president Benjamin Micou states: "We have in the South some important advantages. The health--fullnessand even temperature of the climate; the equality of time of ourlength of days through the year; steady, cheap and abundant waterpower; the raw material at hand; a fertile soil, and a good supply ofunskilled labor. Nature has been bountiful, and even lavish in herinducements. All that is wanted is proper energy and capital tocommand skilled labor, which, well directed, ensures success."Followingthe war, the Tallassee Manufacturing Company returned to operation asa cotton mill.

GeneralBirkett D. Fry (1822-1891) was born in Kanawha County, Virginia and waseducated at the Virginia Military Institute and West Point.
