Original Description:
Exceptionally rare and believed to be previously unknown, 1836 Anti- Martin Van Buren / Anti Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Political Cartoon Stone Lithograph titled “Loco Foco Witches Laying a Spell Over the Country”.
This fascinating and humorous stone lithograph is Medium Folio size and measures approx. 21” by 14” overall including what appear to be full, original margins. The Lithograph does not carry a publisher’s mark but does have a ...slug that reads “Sold at 98 Nassau St.” thus identifying the publisher as A. Donnelly who was located at this address in New York City.
The Image of this wonderful Editorial Cartoon picturing five “witches” flying on a single broom over a farm. While all five wear traditional witch’s pointed hats and black dresses, their faces are masculine – the first Witch is smoking a pipe and in the smoke from the pipe appears the word “Veto”. This first Witch is Andrew Jackson. The last Witch on the broom is Martin Van Buren with his squirrel tail and sideburns. The three Witches in the center of the broom would surely have been readily recognizable to the public in 1836 – prominent Democratic Politicians and supports of Jackson and Van Buren.
The Loco Foco Party (originally known as the Equal Rights Party” were Jacksonian Democrats that rebelled against the Democratic Party “Machine” including Tammany Hall. Eventually the Whigs adopted the term “Loco Foco” as a derogatory name for all Democrats.
Text at the top this exceptionally rare Political Cartoon include two “spells” being cast on the nation by the “witches” - the first reads “Harum Scarum, Cock alorum, with Mattie’s (Martin Van Buren) Magic Broom trio lack-a-day, turn round three times & fly away”. The second reads “Hoblum, Goblum, we imps of hell / Fixes o’er this hopeless land a spell. / There let it be thro’ years of woe, / Descend ye mists, blind all below. / All social bonds henceforth asunder, / That we may promise, deceive and plunder.”
On the ground below the witches, there is a farmer who laments “Oh Lord ha mercy on us, there they be riding in the air and laying their Loco-foco spells as usual, vor these many long years. They have been bewitching us, not content with blasting our harvests, hurling upon us showers of taxation, stagnation and damnation, but they be about, I suppose to wind it all up with the spell of starvation”.
We believe that this is a previously unknown, American Political Editotial Cartoon Lithograph. The Library of Congress does not own an example and WorldCat does not show any examples in any library or museum collection. Internet searches for the title of the Cartoon return zero hits and our extensive research has been unable to uncover a single example other than the example offered here!!
This exceptionally rare and wonderful, Political Americana Editorial Cartoon Lithograph displays in near mint condition - complete and intact with full, original margins. We believe that it has never been framed. The Sheet has been expertly and professionally conserved using museum quality, archival materials and techniques by the world renown experts of the Green Dragon Bindery of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. It has been deacidified and backed with inert, museum quality rice paper and the backing has repaired two edge tears – one affecting the margin areas only and one entering the Image area at the right hand edge approx. 3”.
