FabulousAntiquePalaisRoyal Mother of Pearl Stiletto / Awl French* Circa 1820 The handle ofthis wonderful antiquestiletto is carved completely of lustrous mother ofpearl in the form of a basket of flowers. It has a gilded ferruleand a steel shank with a sharp point. The mother ofpearl is in excellentcondition with no chips, cracks or other damage. It measures 4 3/8"long and was once part of a top qualityPalais Royal workbox. A very similarPalais Roy...al stiletto is shown on p. 49 ofNerylla Taunton's book AntiqueNeedlework Tools and Embroideries. This one has been inmy collection for years. ThePalais Royal was an arcade of shops within a wing of a former royalpalace in Paris. The shops opened in the late 1780s and housed thefinest French artisans selling only the highest quality goods. Items ofmother of pearl and precious metals were specialties there.
