Lioret Model No. 2 Phonograh Outfit With Case And Cylinders, French, Circa 1898
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:256084 | Country/Region of Manufacture: France |
I am including Julien Anton's book on Lioret along with it's English translation. Also included in a reproduction Lioret catalogue.
This particular example has an interesting sale history. It was first sold at Christie's in London in 1995 with nine cylinders. It showed up at auction in Boston, Massachusetts in 2002 with the four cylinders (but with the wrong serial number).
Henri Lioret was a successful clock maker when his friend, doll maker Emile Jumeau approached him, in 1893, to build a phonograph mechanism for his dolls. Unlike Edison's, Lioret built a clockwork motor with a removable moulded celluloid cylinder. The success of the Bebe Jumeau led Lioret to manufacture phonographs commercially. Although of the highest quality and with the advantage of the celluloid cylinders, he was unable to compete with the bigger companies.
I would be happy to deliver this phonograph to the Union show in June for free......it is quite fragile and I'd love to avoid shipping it.
Also, I'm listing two other Lioret cylinders this week.....so please see my other listings.
