A beautiful decorative pair of Chinese silk sleeve bands dating from the Nineteenth Century. The bands are made of mauve silk with the an embroidered silk design with couched gold thread. Each sleeve band is profusely decorated with gold thread couching, and with birds embroidered in coloured silks. The birds depicted on these sleeve bands represent the 9 ranks in the Chinese civil service. The birds signifying the... ranks in the civil service during the Qing Dynasty were the crane, golden pheasant, peacock, wild goose, silver pheasant, egret, mandarin duck, quail and paradise flycatcher.The sleeve bands are both in good condition.
