Description:Thisis an unusual and decorative antique English 18th century oak joinedcoffer, which has been adapted into a storage cupboard at some point, circa1750, in excellent condition. The cofferis constructed with a twin plank top, with a joined section below, which is constructed with buttjoints to the corners, secured by handmade iron nails and peg construction. Two hinged doors open to reveal ample storagespace inside. There is a wooden catch onthe left door, to lock it into place. Theoriginal lid, which features a nice over-hang, is decorated with a mouldedfront edge. The interior is clean, dryand practical and usable and retains its original floor-boards. The front of the coffer is decorated withfour moulded inset panels. The sides of the coffer also feature inset panels. The coffer stands on extended stiles (feet), to make it more accessible as a cupboard. The back of the coffer retains its original rough-hewn panels along withthe original floor. Overall, this cofferboasts a lovely deep, rich oxblood colour and patination and is an idealinterior design piece. This item would look great in avariety of rooms from the hallway, to the living room or bedroom as an ottomanat the foot of the bed. This beautiful piece boasts a rich darkred-and-brown oxblood colour. As itboasts the original wax polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; thiscan only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it hasreceived. Condition Report:
The coffer is in good condition. It iscoffer that has been adapted into a cupboard at some point in the past. Nominal old marks to the top and leadingedges, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. Such old use marks are inevitable andperfectly acceptable due to its age and use it would have received. The interior is clean, dry, and usable. The coffer retains its original lid, floor, sides and back. The coffer stands onextended stiles (feet), to make it more accessible as a cupboard. There is evidence of historical woodworm to thefloorboards; however, this has been thoroughly treated. The coffer is solid in joint; it does notwobble on the floor and is ready to use. Considering the age of this coffer, itis in good condition.
