A VERY UNUSUAL 33 Foot (2 Pole) LAND SURVEYOR CHAIN, Maker Unknown, Circa 1880
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:21286 |
2 pole chains are scarce and were popular with some land surveyors because they were lighter and easie...r to make precision measurements for town and city lots. If they were surveying farmland, I'm sure they would have used a 4 pole chain. This unusual chain consists of 66 individual links (each 6 inches in length), each connected by two circular steel rings (see photo number 5). This land surveyor's chain is in fantastic condition with no surface rust. It is in original / as found condition - the condition will make the winner smile when opening the box. Two Pole Gunter chains are far more uncommon than 66 foot '4 P' (4 pole) or '1 CHAIN' chains.
Edmund Gunter of England initiated its common use for measuring land boundaries in the early 1600s. Land survey records in the American colonies were also recorded in 'chains'. 1 chain by 10 chains = 1 acre. One mile = 80 chains. The use of the 66 foot / 33 foot chains were confined chiefly for land surveying because of the relationship with the acre.
This surveyor / Gunter chain is completely genuine and in untouched original condition with no missing pieces or repairs. As you can see in the 11 photos provided, this is an exceptional surveyor's chain. Condition is nearly as good as the day it was made. This chain was manufactured without brass tally tags - as is ordinary with all 33 foot chains.
We are selling this very rare historical Gunter chain WITHOUT RESERVE - so good luck if you are a discriminating collector or land surveyor because this chain is a true keeper. It will be highly unlikely you will ever see another 2 pole chain with 66 links!
