On offer is this very "cool" looking antique, ORIGINAL, Bears Grease jar (empty) which was originally produced for Jules Hauel, a Perfumer, located in the city of Philadelphia....way back in the day! This antique piece dates to around the Civil War period (about 1860-70) For any viewers who may not know what Bears grease was used for: In the 19th century, it was believed that the grease from a bear carcass couldstimulate hair growth and help prevent baldness. The grease was... scraped off thefatty parts of the Bear skin & carcass & mixed with various perfumes tomake it more appealing. It was then marketed in these small lidded pots (& used extensively) as a men's cosmetic.Condition: For condition report......please see "Item specifics/Seller notes" above and check out all thepics as they form an important part of the overall description. The lid measures 2 7/8" in diameter and the complete jar with lid on top of the base stands about 1 5/8" tall.PLEASE NOTE: A USA "Bears Grease" lid of this scarcity, for this particular example, would normally retail for about $700-$800, but because of the restoration on this one, I have listed at 1/2 that price. Great opportunity to own one at 1/2 the price!
