Offered for sale by auction is a fantastic swordfish rostrum, the rostrum is the sword of the common swordfish Xiphias gladius which is caught for food, the rostrum is made from a lightweight but dense bone which lends itself beautifully for being carved, traditionally swordfish rostrums were turned into weapons b...y people in countries such as papua new guinea due to there strength.
The rostrum is hand carved with traditional scrimshaw scenes depicting octopus and fish, its a beautiful item, the end has been capped with resin as the tusk is hollow at the base, its a huge example measuring 3 feet. It does have some age cracks as can be seen in the photos.
