A rare, monumental c1870 Wood & Hughes silver medallion tea urn.
The firm traces its roots to 1833 New York City when they were listed asGale, Wood & Hughes.
William Gale was their master till 1845.Examples in major collections including the Museum of City of New York.
In tapering urn form with beaded mid-section and base and pierced, "star" vented stem.
The gently... in-curved shoulder with classical portrait medallions of leaf crownedmaiden in pearl collar dress, framed byhand decorated leaf and floral sprays.
The cover retains the elaborately cast architectural finial, with rolled leaf and vinelattice work, and center globe with beaded edge cone.Inset thumb tapering handles with conforming lattice supports.Boldly cast Cavalier, or King's man, finial atop satin chased leaf accented bead and wheel, itself atop twin acanthus crown lattice support spout.Urn attached to footed stand with conforming classical portraits in oval and leaf frame, united by satin chased lead and vine streams.Fixed classical urn burner.Atop anthemion crown leaf accented tapering twin leaf cap feet, with satin chased finish detail.
No monogram.
This c1870 Wood & Hughes silver medallion hot water urn is 18 inches tall and 13 across handlesand weighs a bit over 89 standard ounces.
In fine condition.Interior clean as if little used.Rich silver patina
